When Windows released the new version of their operating system to the public, a lot of the fanfare was about the ease of use and the new security features of the system. They were in a battle with Apple’s new Mac OS X version of their operating system and they needed to impress the public on this front. After so many complaints about Windows Vista, they had to show the public that they improved the overall UI experience. But since they focused so much of the promotion on the UI and the security features, they forgot to let people known about the many enhancements that are in the operating system. There are a lot of features that will help you get your work done more efficiently than before. We will go through the list and show you a couple of them.
The first improvement that you will notice, is what they have done to the task bar. On earlier versions of the operating system, the task bar would just sit there and let you know which programs were open in your session. Now it has taken on a life of it’s own. You can now use the task bar to control the actual program. If you have a music player running, instead of worrying about expanding the music player and making it larger, you can just control the features from the actual task bar. It also allows you to pin programs that you use all of the time. Now if you have a program that you use for work a lot, you do not have to go inside of the start menu to reopen it again after you have closed it. You can now just pin it to the task bar and reopen it again that way. This is a huge time saver.
Another feature that will help you get your work done faster, is the new search functions in the operating system. The search functions in the past when it came to Windows were marginal at best. You would have to install Google’s desktop search to get any kind of decent experience. Microsoft has stepped it up and now they are trying to position the search function as how you should find everything on the computer. From files, to opening up actual applications, they would like for this to be your preferred method for accessing everything. Once you start to get used to typing in the first couple of letters of the program or file that you are looking for, and they pop up quickly, you will start to use it in your everyday workflow. No more taking the time and opening up a folder, just to find a file. Now you just type in a couple of letters and it will appear almost magically.
The last feature that we will talk about when it comes to improving your workflow with Windows 7, is the new networking features of the operating system. More and more, when we do any kind of work, we have a computer network involved. If you have Windows 7 at the job, your IT staff will love how easy it is to set up a network now. The built in tutorial will walk you through all of the basic steps that you need to have a functioning LAN that everyone can share files and data on.
These are just a few of the new features that Windows 7 has to increase your productivity at work. If you take a closer look at the operating system, I am sure that you will find more.
