Will games be the most popular applications on the iPad like they are on the iPhone?

by Admin on May 6, 2010

There are a couple of polls that have come out lately that discuss which are the most popular applications that are being downloaded to the iPhone. Most of the categories are close but there is one that beats the pack without any nearby contenders. That category is games. People download games on the iPhone more than any other application by far. And it doesn’t seem to be stopping. As a matter of fact, so many people download games on the iPhone that Apple has decided that they were going to make a social network based on this fact. Now that the iPad has been released, we see that it has many similarities to the iPhone. Apple is promoting that the iPad is something different entirely but it does have the ability to use applications that were created for the iPhone. So the question that we ask in this article is whether the iPad will be the haven for games that the iPhone was?

As we said earlier in the article, the iPad has many similarities to the iPhone. The biggest similarity to the iPhone is that they both run the same operating system and they both have similar touch features. But the iPad is supposed to be used more as a replacement for the laptop and not a pure mobile device like the iPhone. Many people love to put games on the iPhone because they are using the phone while they are on the go. What better way to beat a boring morning commutes on the subway than to use the iPhone to play a game? It helps you pass the time away so you do not go crazy from boredom. And there are so many games that you can play that you can always have a new experience.

With the iPad it may be hard to see people pulling it out while they are on the morning commute just to play a game. While the device is not that big and it only weighs 1.5 pounds, you mostly likely will not see many people using it for games on their way to work. Maybe, when they are at home or they are relaxing at the coffee shop but not on their way to work. That being said, there are different dynamics that will attract people to use the iPad to play games on. One, the hardware is significantly better than the iPhone so the games will look a lot better than they do on the iPhone. And two, most people have not seen games in that size use the touch screen format. I think that feature alone will have people wanting to play games on the device.

While games on the iPad may never be as big as games on the iPhone, it still will be a huge market. We just think that the games market will be eclipsed a little by the other media devices that you can use on the iPad.
