Top 7 Cool RPG Games For Android Lovers

by Admin on September 17, 2010

Android hasn’t been too kind to high quality games, but that was quite a while ago and it was because the OS was new and the drivers were lacking. Nowadays, there are a lot of great and even amazing games with graphic rivaling those of console video games. 2010 has seen the release of over a dozen great games and hundreds smaller ones from beginner developers.

The RPG genre has been growing in popularity, and as of late, there are tons of great RPG games for the iPhone. Android isn’t too far behind, though. There are a lot of great RPG games available for your Android phone or tablet right now. Here are some of the best:

ZENONIA

This is a great Japanese style RPG which has an amazing story line and characters. You play as a young boy who goes out on a legendary quest trying to figure out just what happened to the world (the virtual one) in the past. The epic story takes you to many places and pits you against many interesting foes. You can spend hours playing it, and the replay value is certainly great. The controls are pretty good, nothing out of the ordinary, but good enough to enjoy the game play.

Path of a Warrior – Imperial Blood

This is a RPG/RTS and massively multiplayer online game that is also one of the most popular games for Android. There are a lot of quests to accomplish and a lot of foes to defeat, plus you can continue playing after the main story line online with other people around the world. If you played Fallout 2 and other similar games, well Path of a Warrior is much like them, and it’s very interesting.

GameBoid

OK, this isn’t really a game, but it lets you play a lot of good ones, so it sort of fits here. If you haven’t heard of it, fear not, neither did I :-) ! It’s a Gameboy Advance emulator and to be fair, this is one of the best apps you can get for your Android phone if you like games. There are a lot of amazing games for Gameboy in all genres (a couple are listed below in this article), and most of them are still very playable even though the graphics are pretty old. You can also find similar emulators for Super Nintendo Entertainment System and other Nintendo consoles. If you grew up with one those consoles, you’ll certainly like replaying all the good stuff again, on a more modern device.

Golden Sun

This is one of the best Gameboy Advance RPG games ever! The story line follows a few mages that are sent to prevent an outbreak of alchemy destruction from being released, and the game has a lot of unique game play features, which make it an excellent choice even nowadays. If you want to play a very good retro RPG and have an Android phone, you should definitely get the GameBoid emulator app and the Golden Sun game (or even the whole series of games :-) .

Chrono Trigger

This game requires the SNESoid app (SNES emulator, which has a free version) to be installed, but it’s absolutely worth it. Chrono trigger is one of the best SNES RPG games, and you will definitely like replaying it on your Android phone. The game’s graphics look simple, but once you get into it and start battling various foes, you’ll think it’s the best game in the world (at least for a mobile device :-) . It’s definitely worth having, and you can find a ROM for absolutely free if you want to.

Final Fantasy (1 and 2)

Yet another amazing game for the GameBoid emulator, Final Fantasy is one of the best RPGs ever, for any platform. It has spanned a huge franchise and you’ve probably already heard about it or one of the movies. You might also remember the whole commotion about the Final Fantasy XIII for PlayStation 3 if you’ve been using YouTube and Google long enough. All in all, these 2 games are definitely worth having, an they’re much better in terms of story line and player engagement that any other iPhone or Android  game on the market.

Parallel Kingdom

This is another MMORPG game, with a twist: it uses the players’ real world GPS data to position them on the map, so you can fight with them in the virtual world while going to a pizza place or pub in the real world :-) .

The list of games for Android is constantly expanding, and I believe we’ll see even more and better titles by the end of the year. But you can certainly already enjoy some very good games for Android right now, and if you’re a fan of the RPG genre, you should definitely give the above listed games a try – I’m sure you’ll like them!

Wait, so your list of the best ANDROID games is dominated by pirated gameboy games?

Seriously? Your suggestion is to steal/pirate games from other systems?

Alex Wells November 11, 2010 at 1:41 am

@Ben: Well, you’re right, except that these games aren’t sold anymore, and the consoles and game cartridges have been discontinued. But the games are pretty awesome, and most of them are better than a lot of Android games on the market, so why not play them using an emulator.

I understand your respect for copyright, but it seems a bit extreme in this case. You’re not hurting their profits (hell, you’re actually helping them by keeping the interest alive and buying sequels to the games, for example).

I would argue that the copyright law itself is in serious need of an update for software content, as there are thousands of companies (the so-called patent trolls) that take advantage of it, charging fees and suing people/companies for obscure code or patents that were registered 20 years ago and aren’t actually used in their original form and for their original purpose by anyone now (but thankfully, Nintendo and others aren’t harassing people for playing their old games on console emulators).

@Ben Dude. Shut up!! LoL!! Is it illegal to make a copy of a DVD if you already bought it? If you answered yes, then why does every computer come with a free software to let you rip the cd to your computer?

The thing is, actually here’s an example:

I actually own or bought Super Mario World. So I can download a rom as well and legally have the rom without any copyright issues. As long as I don’t make a copy and give it to someone else. Unless I give them the original as well.

Its like making a copy of your music cd’s to put on your ipod. You got a copy of the game to put on your phone. Its only illegal if you make it illegal, like limewire. Limewire isn’t illegal, only used illegally.

So you get it now? You can look this up if you want to, or just actually pay attention to the copyright notice when a movie starts. LoL!!

Yes you should own the original game if you want to play the ROM. Although this is a little vague area, but IMO if you buy the retro game on for instance the Wii or XBLA, i think you should be entitled to run the classic nintendo rom on an emulator too.
This of course brings up the question, if you bought the original already back in the day, should you pay for it again on things like Wii or XBLA ?

Acedia RPG January 7, 2011 at 1:50 am

I released an RPG recently on Android titled Acedia RPG. You can search for it in the market. There is a lite version to try before you buy. It is a retro RPG that was inspired by old CRPG like the early Ultima series. Those were some of my favorite games back in the 80′s and I wanted to see something similar for Android. The graphics and gameplay are basic but I like how it turned out. Give it a try!

Thanks

Switching from the iPhone to the android i was under the impression that the games would be the same, but the iPhone has much better games and much more.
Lack of quality 3D games is a weakness in the Android Market.
Android Market still has a long way to go before it becomes a true option for gamers.

May I also suggest Wacky Toons RPG for android. It’s an open world RPG shooter released 2 weeks ago.

Check it out here https://market.android.com/details?id=org.lucius.edz

My favorite RPG for Android would have to be Deadly Dungeons. Developer is really cool and updates frequently. Very active on the forums at http://deadlydungeons.com

Uh, well, I don’t think he was upset about copyright infringement, but the name of the article implies that the games would be for Android, not other consoles. Those games are good, but if you’re any kind of RPG nerd, you’ve beaten them senseless. I want RPGs coded and designed for my droid.
