It’s no surprise that smartphones are taking over the mobile market. No one wants to carry around a cell phone and a PDA; it’s too much of a hassle, especially when it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s absolutely no reason not to go for an all-in-one device that can make your phone calls, keep your calendar, send your emails, and even more. Smartphones are a smart choice in today’s fast paced world. And in case you’re having a hard time choosing the one that’s right for you, here are the top 3 smartphones so far this year.
The iPhone 3GS
Apple has finally decided to step up their game, and add all the normal features that you expect out a cell phone these days. The iPhone 3GS has multimedia messaging capabilities, and you can even record videos. This time around, this version of the iPhone comes with the handy voice dialing feature as well, which is a plus. It runs faster than before, and the battery life is now somewhat longer than before.
As can be expected, the iPhone 3GS maintains its multimedia quality, but it still falls short in some areas. Call quality and reception have not improved, and there’s still no support for flash. USB transfer and storage has not been added, and you definitely won’t be able to multitask with this version.
For what it’s worth, the iPhone 3GS is really no step up from the 3G version. It is faster, and it’s great that there have been a few new features added. For some people, the iPhone 3GS might appear to be a good buy. Of course, the iPhone 4 is set to ship at the end of the month, so it would be an even better idea to just preorder one of those. Everyone is already expecting that it will take the crown as the “best” smartphone, and more than likely, it will.
HTC Droid Incredible
Verizon has an excellent 3G network, and the HTC Droid Incredible is proof of that. This smartphone is extremely fast and it comes equipped with HTC Sense, which enhances those features found in Android 2.1. The HTC Droid Incredible sports an 8-megapixel camera, and it’s packed with 8GB of internal memory for your use. You also get Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, and there’s even a built-in GPS system.
Unfortunately, you’ll find that the voice and data options of this phone can’t peacefully coexist; you can’t use them both at the same time. And while this smartphone does offer a decent multimedia experience, it doesn’t surpass the competition.
Overall, the HTC Droid Incredible is an excellent choice of phone, and makes its mark as the best smartphone that Verizon has to offer. It has a sleek design and well polished user interface, and many would say it’s the most favored of Android devices available.
HTC Evo 4G
The HTC Evo 4G isn’t the best smartphone, but it is one of them. It offers great 4G speeds, and the mobile hot-spot feature allows for the connection of eight different devices at any one time. The Evo has a front-facing camera to accommodate video chats, and also includes an 8-megapixel camera for taking snapshots and recording videos in HD. This smartphone also features the Android 2.1 interface with HTC Sense, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and a 4.3-inch touch screen. In addition, it also comes equipped with the HQ video player from YouTube and an HDMI port.
It would seem that all is well with this phone, but Sprint does stand to make a few improvements here and there. Their 4G network coverage area is limited, so the $10 premium data fee they charge isn’t that well received. To add to the woes of owning this phone, the Evo doesn’t support voice-activated dialing for Bluetooth and the battery life is pretty low.
Even with its shortcomings, the HTC Evo 4G still makes the cut as Sprint’s top smartphone. This phone is at the forefront, and shows just how promising 4G really is. As Sprint’s WiMax network continues to expand, 4G coverage will broaden. Until then, people will probably frown on the mandatory data add-on, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this phone is one of the best Androids available right now.
