In their quest for weight loss, a lot of people tend to do certain things that they think will help them. However, contrary to their beliefs, these methods are actually ineffective and sometimes downright dangerous for their health.

These bad practices stem generally from common misconceptions about our body’s functions and how food and physical activity affect them. These mistakes could be easily avoided if people that are trying to lose weight would just learn about them.

Here are the top ten mistakes people make when trying to lose weight:

1. Not exercising

While it is true that you can lose weight just by using a diet, this is most of the times not the best method. Physical exercise and workouts can increase the amount of weight lost in a certain amount of time while allowing for the creation of a beautiful and strong body. Not only that – muscles will also burn more fat even after you stop the diet, so having more of them means your chances of getting fat again will be much lower.

2. Skipping breakfast

Breakfasts are often the signal for a day start for our bodies. Some people are so used to them that if they skip a breakfast they feel sleepy, angry and can not think or act as they normally would. Skipping your breakfast, therefore, may be a very bad idea and can lead to you actually eating more when you get the chance and the body saving more calories than it usually does.

Snacks should not be eaten without thinking. If you maintain a diet, but eat small snacks all day long, you will most probably not lose weight, as calories from them can easily add up, which will lead to an ultimately ineffective weight loss strategy.

4. Establishing unrealistic goals

You should avoid unrealistic goals like shedding 20 pounds in the first week unless you have a very strong discipline. Setting them will most probably lead to frustration and discouragement when the weight lost will turn out to be nowhere near that amount.

Beverages must also beaccunted for when calculating your calories intake, as some types of coffee and cocktails contain over 300 calories per 16 ounces. Juices and sodas, for example, contain a lot of calories and do not reduce your hunger at all, which is a dangerous combination. After having all these drinks, you could actually end up with more calories.

Drinking too little water will slow down your body’s metabolism, as it needs water to burn all the fat. Studies confirm that people drinking at least eight glasses of water every day can burn more calories compared to those who drink less.

7. Not keeping a journal

When you don’t keep track of your calories intake, they can easily pile up and go over the acceptable limit. You can stop keeping a log or a journal only after you’re sure you know how much is enough and can control your eating habits.

8. Avoiding dairy products

Studies show that fat is burned more effectively when the organism has enough calcium. However, this effect has not been observed whn using calcium supplements, so there must be other elements in dairy products that can help you lose fat. That’s why you should not avoid them, but drink low-fat milk and other products regularly.

9. Consuming a lot of low-fat products

If a product is low-fat or fat-free, you shouldn’t think of it as an opportunity to order extra servings. For example, a large low-fat ice-cream actually has more calories than a small regular one. So be careful and always check the amount of sugar and calories on every product.

10. Going for rapid weight loss diets

While the extreme low calories intake from rapid weight loss diets can lead to a quicker weight loss, it can also slow down your metabolism, and once you resume your regular diet, the body will process food slower than it did before, leading to even faster weight gain.

The success of any weight loss program lies in doing the right things, following the rules and avoiding the mistakes made by other people.
