This is in continuation with Tata Sky Review – Part 1; in this second part we will take a look at Tata Sky Software. Tata Sky has good software where all basic things have been put on right place, but it lacks few features. There are no issues in functionality of software.

Mini Guide
Tata Sky’s mini guide shows programs for next 12 hours. It takes around 2-3 minutes for mini guide to load for all channels after startup. Mini Guide can be viewed in English or Hindi. There is an option to set reminders for program. Also we can change audio language right from mini guide. You can also get information about running program by pressing info button. There is no option to navigate by genre. Suppose you are watching Star Plus and want to see what is coming on Discovery without switching channel, you will have to scroll channel by channel, that’s really frustrating.

Favorites
In Tata Sky one can set a single list of 20 favorite channels. All the channels added in favorite list are automatically added to channel no. 900 and onwards. Its pity that there is only one list of 20 channels, when they can easily allow more than that (Channel No. 900 to Channel No. 999).

Messages/Alerts
Every time a new alert comes, a message Icon is displayed on screen and yellow LED on STB. I personally feel Message Icon is very big. It’s annoying to have such a large icon in front of your screen. Moreover it takes around 10-20 seconds to go to messages and make the icon disappear.
There is alert for A/C Stats, which cannot be deleted. This alert has details of your last Transaction, Customer ID and Due Date.

Guide
Guide shows programs for channels for next 3-4 days. Unlike Mini-Guide, here you can see check schedule by genre. There is no search option, so if you are looking for some specific program. You will have to check it out yourself.

It’s a place from where you can view reminder, set Favorite channels, change system settings and view your account information.

There is an option to select between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. But it does not work, May be in future we can see this working.

In this option you can set the Default Volume level for your STB (when STB starts).

Parental control option is password protected. Here we can disable/enable channels by their number/name or type of the programs. I would personally introduce this software with custom silicone wristbands to all my friends just because of the efficiency of parental control function.

• Language Settings
There is an option to select on-screen language between Hindi and English. If you select Hindi most of the options including Guide, Help, Organiser starts showing in Hindi.
Also there is option to change default Audio Language. Here you have option to choose between English, Hindi, Malayalam, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Nice review, however as mentioned the message alert icon is too big, its not that BIG.
