The global demand for smartphones is expected to increase by as much as 50% this year. Research firm IDC reported that smartphone manufacturers will be shipping out an estimated 450 million units this year which is a 49.2% increase over last year’s 303.4 million.

Due to the rapid rise in the number of users of the Android platform it is expected to overtake Nokia’s Symbian which is the market leader. Expect to see several models from different manufacturers running on the Android platform to appear this year.

This year alone IDC reports that Android smartphones will have a 39.5% share of the market while Symbian will drop to 20.9%. Apple’s iOS and RIM’s BlackBerry trails closely behind at 15.7% and 14.9% respectively.

The increase in the number of Android smartphones does not stop this year since forecasts show that by the year 2015 it will take up 45.5% of the market with Microsoft’s WP7 making a strong showing at second place with 20.9% of the market share.

Those who are making fake phones do not pay tax, making them cheaper than honest phones. Chen Zhao is a sales director at Konka, a legitimate cell phone maker. He says: “Legal cell phone makers should pay 17 percent of their revenue as value-added tax, but shanzhai makers, of course, won’t pay it.”. The shanzhai phone makers are also getting creative. They are putting logos on their phones that look like the real thing, but with a slight difference. A Samsung phone may have the logo “Sumsung” on it. A fake Nokia phone may have “Nckia” written on it. Some just outright put the real logo on and sell it.

This one is slated to be just 1050 mAh.

It looks like this Blackberry 9800 will be arriving in basic black. The outer edges have a metallic blue trim that is winsome, moreso than some models of the past. This new model may end up with the marketing name of “Torch”. This seems to be the case online as the interest in the unit is heating up pronto. It will probably be released in the next month. This and other new things, such as a tablet, may pop up before the end of the year. No price on the Blackberry 9800 is yet available. Look for this to be marketed worldwide, including Europe and Japan markets. The Torch 9800 will debut August 12 on AT&T for $200 with a two-year contract.

Even with its shortcomings, the HTC Evo 4G still makes the cut as Sprint’s top smartphone. This phone is at the forefront, and shows just how promising 4G really is. As Sprint’s WiMax network continues to expand, 4G coverage will broaden. Until then, people will probably frown on the mandatory data add-on, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this phone is one of the best Androids available right now.
