T-Mobile HTC MyTouch 3G Android Phone Review

by Admin on July 5, 2010

The HTC MyTouch 3G, the smartphone with the innovative Android platform and a great Google experience, has an eye-catching design with a gorgeous display, tactile controls, and an easy-to-use, customizable interface. The Phone has a built-in web browser and a 3.2 inch touchscreen that can display internet content as you would see it on a PC. Google Maps™ provides its consumers with up-to-date city maps and route descriptions. All the videos available on the internet can also be accessed on YouTube™ via the handset. Contacts, calendar entries and e-mails are automatically synchronised in the user’s personal Google Mail™ account whether they are made on the Google website or on the HTC Magic. Google Talk™ enables instant messaging in real time with all Google.

It includes all the in-demand smartphone hardware features: Wi-Fi (11g & b) and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, built-in GPS (but no turn-by-turn navigation software, just Google Maps) and 3.2-megapixel video-capable camera. Magic only comes with 512 MB of flash memory and 288 MB of RAM onboard, but the microSD card slot lets you add 16GB of flash memory for about $100, or 8GB for about $35. Its processor is the 528-MHz Qualcomm MSM 7200. It easily matches and in some respects surpasses iPhone 3G in terms of speed and responsiveness.

Thanks to the Android open operating system, the user can download lots of additional programs, some of them free of charge, via Android Market to customize the phone to their personal needs. They can use the Barcoo application to scan in bar codes and retrieve product information. The Radioland application delivers radio programs of different genres at the touch of a button.

But nevertheless the product has also got its own flaws. Fewer applications than iPhone; weaker e-mail experience than BlackBerry; no standard headphone jack and in addition it also lacks important features like a standard 3.5-millimeter headset jack, a file manager, and camera-editing options. Video quality is uneven, and the HTML browser interface and virtual keyboard have their flaws. Also, it doesn’t support Outlook calendar and contacts syncing.

Applications

Maps:

Any smartphone should have a decent Map application. Fortunately, the MyTouch 3G / HTC Magic does have a good implementation. It gets the job done and is quite efficient and is totally usable.

Glympse:

Glympse is an application that lets you “share your where” for a determined amount of time with anyone who has an email. There’s no need for your friends to have a Glympse account.

Google Voice:

Google Voice (GV) lets you create a “virtual” number that can then be redirected to one or many physical phones. The GV app lets you place calls using your T-Mobile minutes, which doesn’t seem all that useful, except that calls placed via GV show up with your GV number. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to call via WIFI (for free/low-price/from abroad) with the current version.

Skype:

Skype works very well (voice and IM), and unlike the iPhone version, it can stay up even when you switch to another app. That’s huge for those who want to stay connected at all time. The downside of this app is that I found it to slow down the phone.

The phone and its Android operating system are impressive and in some respects out-performing all its main rivals.
