A new smartphone design from Samsung called the W899 is hitting shelves in China and ( presumably ) Korea soon. It is unlike any other handset format so far. Read on to find out what the W899 is like here in this short article.
Samsung believes two screens are better than one. The Samsung W899 is made with two very clear Super AMOLED screens. The smartphone is 17.55 millimeters thick or .69 inch for readers in the United States. It is also 107.5 millimeters ( 4.23 inches ) tall. It weighs 83 grams ( 5.8 ounces ). It will be harder to get into a pocket than most smartphones because of the extra thickness. The clamshell layout is just like those of days gone by, with the cover flipping up to reveal a second screen and the number pad. The colors of the W899 make it look expensive. The W899 is crafted in gold and black.
Samsung gave the W899 two cameras. There is a five megapixel camera on the back, and a second camera for the front. The camera on the front is for video calling. The rear camera has flash, auto focus and more than likely geo tagging. The geo tagging can be shut off in the menus of the W899 for security and privacy if desired. The rear camera can produce videos in high definition format.
When this smartphone is opened, a familiar twelve-button number pad is revealed. Above the number pad is a D-Pad, what some call a trackpad, for navigation of the internal screen. Both screens are touch screens so the D-Pad not really needed. The outer screen has the four standard android buttons; “back”, “menu”, “search” and “home”. Both screens are rated for WVGA resolution. Both screens are crafted at the same size; 3.3 inches.
The operating system running the Samsung W899 is android. It is included in the older 2.2 “froyo” version. The newest version is now Android 2.3 GingerBread. The 2.2 version comes with the ability to send apps to the MicroSD card. Android is free ( no money required ) and is created by the search engine Google. It comes with an online marketplace with over 180,000 apps ( programs ) that can be downloaded for use on android-equipped devices. Android comes with a Webkit browser that shows Adobe flash files in the latest version; 10.1. The android software is used by men ( 73 percent ) more than by women. Identity theft is a growing crime and around twenty percent of android apps are unsafe for personal information. Be careful what you choose in the android marketplace. On a good note, a carjacker was abducted within seven minutes by the police after stealing a car. The car had an android smartphone inside with an app sending out its location to the owner.
Wi-Fi is featured for the Samsung W899. It also has bluetooth, WAPI and GPS. The wired connections are not yet given, but are likely to be a 3.5 millimeter head phone jack and a Micro USB port. The battery size is also not yet given. This is a rather bulky device and created for those who are looking for something in a different style. It is going to be available in China through China Telecom. There is no word yet for North America.
