by Admin on March 31, 2010

How many smartphone makers hand out prizes for their users to modify their units ? I only know of one; Nokia. Nokia came out with must be the grandfather of smartphones last year and the world will never be the same again. Read on to find out more on the Nokia N900, the smartphone some people call “The Beast”.

With a form factor now that is universally recognized, the Nokia N900 is the progenitor of what the world knows as the smartphone. It has a great screen, a great feel in the hands, an open source operating system and power. It is not really put forth as a smartphone by its creators, but does have that ability, among many other abilities. All the power is packed into a great looking package that is just under three quarters of an inch thick. Some of the other names for the N900 are “Rover” and “RX-51″.

The people at Nokia and Linux are reponsible for this electronic work of art. The operating system of the N900 and the processor are the reasons the smartphone is put forth as a portable computer by Nokia. It really is a computer more than a phone, so this description is accurate. Have you taken a look at their web site ? It has in huge letters; “Raw Computer Power”. That is what you have here. You happen to also be able to talk on it.

The operating system on the Nokia N900 is taken care of by the Linux-based Maemo 5 system. It is soon to be called Meego, so get ready for the switch. It has social networking, firefox, games, skype and something called “pixelpipe media gateway”. With pixelpipe you can publish directly to your favorite social networking sites. Myspace, twitter, youtube and others are all supported. The very popular “Ovi Store” is included. This is where you can get whatever it is you need to make your life easier using your N900. Do you want to track your exercise habits ? Use the application from Nike. Do you want to play a game ? The N900 has plenty to choose from, even the older Nintendo ones. Want to surf the web ? The browser on the N900 navigates pages just like on your PC or laptop. This operating system is getting updates constantly to make it even better.

The N900 runs on GSM quad band networks and WCDMA networks for voice communications. For data, everything is included except infrared. Wi-Fi is a great boon for this device and lets it perform the way it was meant to perform. There is 32 gigabytes of storage in the N900 and 256 megabytes of RAM memory. For external storage you have a MicroSD card slot. It can handle a card up to sixteen gigabytes in size.

The camera on the N900 takes pictures at the level of five megapixels. It is enhanced with dual LED flash and a tessar lens to give your photos better quality. It takes videos at the wide aspect ratio of WVGA. The N900 has a special FM transmitter to be able to use in your auto or at home. It transmits music to a FM radio. This is quite handy if you live in an area that has lousy radio stations.

Overall the N900 is a powerful device and one that other manufacturers are having a hot time imitating. Nokia is known as the innovator and this smartphone is one of their prime examples.
