New Android Smartphone Motorola Milestone 2 Arrives

With the success of Motorola Milestone which is known as GSM version of Motorola Droid launched in previous November, Motorola released updated version of its Milestone named Milestone 2 which is released on 1st September, 2010. All know that Milestone is the GSM version of Droid and now Milestone 2 is also GSM version of Droid 2 which is released previous month. The difference is Milestone 2 is capable of recording videos at 720 pixel.

Keypad:

You can see the difference in keypad design between the previous version of Milestone and latest Motorola Milestone 2. D-pad(Directional pad) is removed from the keyboard in Milestone 2 and keys in keypad are slightly raised so now its even easy to work with keys.

Removal of D-pad in Motorola Milestone 2 created lot of space for keypad and the new keypad is lot more sophisticated to work with. Observe the pattern of keys placed on the keypad in both the phones. The new keyboard layout is more efficient with lot of space for keys.

Hardware:

Motorola added major hardware upgrades to Milestone 2 such as powerful processor, more internal memory, improved keypad. Milestone is powered by OMAP 1 GHz processor by Texas instrument which is one of the major improvement from previous version which is powered by 600 MHz processor.
In previous version, only 133Mb of internal memory is there thus causing problem when loading new applications. This problem is solved in Milestone 2 by increasing internal memory to 8GB.
Storage:

Milestone 2 has 8GB in-built memory and shipped with 8GB microSD card and expandable up to 32GB.

Design:

Only one major design upgrade you find in Milestone 2 is the improved keyboard layout. Another design upgrade you find is a lip covering the space you find in previous Milestone. The dimensions of the Milestone 2 is pretty much same as Milestone. So, accessories like docking station of previous phone will fit to the latest version.

Display:

Display of Motorola Milestone 2 is same as Milestone which has 3.7″ TFT capacitive touchscreen with a screen resolution of 480 x 854 pixels which can display 16 Million colors. The screen has anti-reflective coating. Like the Milestone, this latest device also supports multi-touch. To protect the screen from scratches a gorilla glass is present on the screen.

Input:

You can input to the device in many ways through physical keyboard(Type), virtual keypad(Touch), using mic(Talk), Swype. When you can’t type you can turn on your mic and speak, Milestone 2 will understand your language and automatically type the text in the box. SWYPE is another interesting concept in Milestone you can type the words with out lifting your finger. You can see what this is in the above image.

Camera:

Like the previous Milestone, the camera is 5 MPx with auto-focus and duel LED flash. Milestone can only shoot video with 23 fps but the new Milestone 2 can shoot 720 Px video at 30 fps which is a major improvement in camera. So quality of the video in Milestone 2 is enhanced. Image editing tools like Geo tagging, cropping and rotating are present.

Milestone supports Quad-band GSM, HSDPA and HSUPA high-speed data.

Software:

One of the major update is Android 2.2 (Froyo) to Milestone 2 which would be Android 2.1 for previous Milestone. On the top of Android 2.2 Motorola added latest version of MOTOBLUR service. This service will keep track of your contacts and Social networking sites. Flash player 10 which is shipped with Android 2.2 will play all the flash content on the web.

Milestone included all Google mobile services such as Google Mail, Contact Sync, Youtube, search by voice etc, in Milestone 2.

Multimedia:

There is not separate media player Milestone is shipped with, it uses Android media player to play songs and video. It supports almost all formats of audio and video that are present now.

Browsing:

Milestone is powered by open source V8 JavaScript engine from Google so you experience faster web browsing and faster app performance. Since Milestone 2 is shipped with Android 2.2, it supports full fledged flash applications because Android 2.2 comes with Flash player 10. Now you can experience the web interactively.

Tethering:

The new Motorola Milestone 2 comes with Tethering. Using this feature you use your mobile phone as a modem. Milestone 2 also acts as wireless hot-spot and it support at most 5 devices. Milestone lacks this feature.

Navigation:

GPS is included with Google turn-by-turn navigation. If you are roaming you can save roaming charges by installing a standalone SatNav application. A Digital compass is present in Milestone 2 which can geo-tag photos for you.

Battery:

Milestone 2 is shipped with 1400 mAh Li Ion battery but no one has posted the battery life Milestone 2 since the release. We will update the information as soon as possible.

This phone is heavy with a weight of 165 grams but its a pocket friendly mobile with dimensions 60.5 x 116.3 x 13.7 mm.

The touch screen is not responsive as Droid X this is what i observed in Milestone 2.
