Motorola Droid X Review-Verizon’s New Android Phone

by Admin on July 6, 2010

How do you counteract the power of the iPhone 4 and the HTC EVO 4G? Well if you’re Verizon, you come up with your own version of the latter device and pray that your 80 million plus subscribers will be wowed into putting down $200 on contract to purchase said device.

And that is exactly what they have done. Granted the Droid is an awesome device and is a true iPhone 3GS counterpart, but it lacks greatly against the new iPhone 4. So of course, while Big Red mulls the idea of bringing Apple into the fold, they decided to have Motorola go ahead and build them their own version of the HTC EVO 4G that will not only take on said phone but the iPhone 4 as well.

What follows is a preview of said device. Please be aware that neither Motorola or Verizon have confirmed all the info listed below. But after playing with the device for some time, here are our observations and review.

First of all, the device is a marvelous piece of hardware. The Droid X sports a 4.3 inch screen which is WVGA display and comes with 854 x 480 pixels. This provides an awesome viewing experience and one that makes up for the screen size lost on Motorola’s former flagship Android devices such as the Droid or the Droid Incredible.

As for buttons, there are four buttons under the screen. There is a home button, a back button, a search button as well as a menu button. To be expected there is no physical QWERTY keyboard so everything concerning typing has to be done onscreen (like the iPhone). There are volume buttons on the side of the device but other than that, there’s not much in terms of physical buttons.

Under the hood is a 1GHz Snapdragon processor (like the one found in the Evo and Incredible). Needless to say, the 1GHz is pretty awesome to say the least and thanks to its excellent graphics processing skills, it makes the device one hell of a responsive and fluid system to use.

As for the software, the Droid X is running Android 2.1 but will be getting the Froyo (2.2)update when it becomes available. That said, unlike the Droid which was marketed as a business specific device, Motorola is taking a different approach with the Droid X and as such they have stuck a version of MOTOblur on said device. It’s pretty clean and does not distract from the whole experience but for some reason we preferred HTC Sense UI a bit more, maybe it’s because it is more refined then MOTOblur.

That said, although the phone is our favorite device on Verizon and can actually make calls unlike many other popular phones on the market, if you’re not a fan of Android, this will be the deal breaker. Apple said that a phones platform is only as good as its app store and seeing that the Android marketplace is boasting over 35,000 apps, we’d say it’s pretty safe to say that there will be something in the Android Marketplace for everyone and the Droid X will not disappoint.

I got my Droid X and I absolutely love this piece of equipment. The iphone 4 is def cool too, several of my friends have them. But I am more than happy with my new Droid X

Although the Android X is fairly old now considering how fast new phones come out it comprises the largest segment of Smartphones with the Android platform. I thought about getting a used one since they are so easy to come by. I can use my TV Everywhere though my DISH Network employee service and my Sling adapter. Right now I have an iPhone and it works great but my 3G phone is out of date. This review really helped me see the advantages because I can’t afford a 4G iPhone right now until my contract is up. (I lost my last one)
