Motorola Droid 2 First Look

The Droid was the device that was supposed to be the counterpart for the iPhone 3GS for Verizon customers. Very few iPhone “killers” have lived up to their name, and thankfully the Droid was one such device that was a solid alternative to the iPhone. The Droid 2, while not yet announced, is the succeor to one of Verizon’s best selling devices and promises to bring a bunch of improvements.

First of all, the device, while almost identical to the first, has smoothed its edges (literally), gone are most of the sharp curves and replacing that are smoothed lines and edges. More importantly, the power/sleep button as well as the micro-USB port and headphones jack as well as the volume buttons remain the same as the original. As for the QWERTY keyboard, it is redesigned and the keys are now blue colored instead of gold like the original. The directional button on the keyboard is gone and replacing it is a four arrow keys.

Unlike the Original Droid, this device is running Android 2.1 along with Ninjablur (some type of MOTOblur skin). According to sources at Verizon, although the device we played with had Android 2.1, they said most naturally the Droid 2 would see Froyo 2.2 without a skin when it launched.

Ne of the cool features is the phone sports 8GB of onboard memory as well as a microSD slot with an included 8GB card that can of course be expanded. As for the processor, we’re hearing it is clocked at 768GHz instead of the 1GHz we heard earlier.

In our tests, the device performed pretty well. The screen was very responsive and for those who are familiar with the former Droid as well as Android on a hold, there is nothing extra special about this iteration of the Droid 2 software side. Rather, more of the innovation lies under the hood in the form of hardware.

It is yet to be seen whether this will become Verizon’s flagship device or if the new DROID X will capture that crown. But whether that is true or not, this is shaping up to be a nice device and for those who are looking for an Android phone with a physical keyboard and something more business eccentric, the Droid 2 is looking to be a viable option. That said, we can’t but wonder if the processor and screen real estate will lead many potential buyers to consider the Droid X or Droid Incredible over the Droid 2. As for a release date, we were able to confirm with Verizon reps that the Droid 2 will be released within the “next few weeks,” and if we’d have to make a bet, we’d say late July early August, although it could end up being a holiday device, which is very unlikely we might add.
