The Motorola Droid 2 is a clear product of the future, a forerunner of devices to come. The company Motorola has released into the market a new version of the first Motorola Droid. This smart phone is equipped with Android, i.e., the latest and now acclaimed icon of Google, in its version 2.x.
Motorola has not been mean, regarding to the added high-tech improvements.
Motorola Droid operates based on Android 2.2, also known as Froyo. The user interface is designed and intended for end users who carry their phone in the pocket, and are always connected to the Internet, so that it offers direct access to Android Market to facilitate the downloading of applications and services.
Design and Display
The new Motorola Droid 2 retains many of the specifications of its predecessor Motorola Droid. In fact, this is a terminal with the measures 16.3 mm * 60.5 mm * 13.7 mm and weighs only 169 grams, with a design characterized by its simplicity. Its squared shapes make it a sophisticated cell-phone, large and heavy. However, in turn, we must say that we still have a cell-phone, which can be carried in the pocket and is equipped with a full mechanical QWERTY keyboard, which slips into its back.
Not less interesting is its touch screen TFT which is 3.7 inches. It has a resolution of 480 × 854 pixels with a depth of up to 16 million colors.
Its design is in short, a device which is dark blue with silver accents on the edges. This new feature replaces the old look with gold accents and the D-Pad Touch that we had in the previous version. In this sense, the QWERTY keyboard gained in scope, since it can be extended further than in the previous version, which makes it much more useful to use.
Connectivity
The new Motorola Droid is equipped with 3G, CDMA and EV-DO 800/1900, so it is perfectly appropriate to navigate through the broadband Internet. But there are many more issues to discuss. One of the advantages is that the phone also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g, allowing us to access any wireless network available, whether we are in a bar, in the cafeteria or train station. With the intention of making this phone a tool to be permanently connected, the terminal is equipped with direct access to Google Search, Maps, Gmail, Youtube, Google Talk, and to communicate via instant messaging.
As if this were not enough, we still have the traditional Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, allowing us to transfer and receive files between other terminals of the same characteristics. We also have connectivity A-GPS which includes Google Maps and of course, the corresponding ports that will allow us charge our phone, transferring files from one device to another or loading free music. We also have a connection for micro USB, a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack.
Users who so desire may also extend the terminal’s internal memory through a microSD card slot. In fact, the initial capacity is for 8 GB phone, but can be extended up to 32 GB, large enough to add large amounts of multimedia files. 8 GB should be enough for most user, but as we know, you never get enough storage.
Camera and multimedia
The camera phone has not suffered too many variations from the first version of the Droid. In fact, we have here the same five megapixel sensor, allowing us to obtain snapshots of up 2592 x 1944 pixel of resolution. In addition to these features, the Motorola Droid 2 allow us to use the Auto function or autofocus, image stabilizer and geotagging, the most useful option to label our pictures by location where they have been taken.
In the multimedia section, Motorola has not yet offered extensive specifications on the possibilities of the phone. Still, we know that the Droid 2 is capable of playing music, video and photos in the formats MP3, H.263, H.264, MP3, AAC +, WMA and WMV.
Operating system and battery
As it could not be otherwise, Motorola has chosen to continue their Android saga of particularly smart cell-phones. For the occasion, it has selected the 2.2 version of the Google operating system, it is known by the name of Froyo. Still, the Motorola Droid can be updated with future versions of this operating system, dubbed Android 3.0 or Gingerbread. The software runs through a processor running at 1 GHz. In addition, the original software has very useful applications like Skype or Blockbuster On Demand.
The Motorola Droid 2 comes equipped with a lithium polymer battery with capacity of 1,400 mAh. According to Motorola, it will guarantee up to ten hours of battery talk time and about 315 hours in standby.
