Motorola Backflip Review-First Android Phone on AT&T

by Admin on May 11, 2010

The Motorola Backflip is quite the different format. It has both formats that are popular with the touchscreen crowd and the people who still like the manual keyboard. Take a look at the different features here in this quick article on the Backflip.

The Backflip is winning awards with its unique design. It actually opens up like a book. This puts the manual keyboard on the back of the device. The keyboard is therefore open to the world at all times. Putting it into the pocket will get the dust ( and whatever else you may have ) from your pocket into the keys, since they have small spaces between them. The Backflip smartphone is average in height and just over half an inch thick.

The screen is average in size and resolution. It weighs in at 3.1 inches. The resolution is 320 by 480 pixels. It has the ability to show 262,144 colors, which is again, average. It has the ability to turn the screen automatically from the portrait to the landscape mode, but not for every menu item. The browser and maps are able to use this feature. The back of the screen has something called the “Backtrack” from Motorola. Opening up the Backflip puts the screen above the manual keyboard. The backtrack device is a trackpad. You use it while looking at the screen. This means your finger is not in the way while you are using the trackpad ( backtrack ) while navigating the smartphone. Overalll, the screen experience is good but not overwhelmingly good.

The hardware supporting the Motorola Backflip is also fairly average. It is running a Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 megahertz processor. It is sufficient for normal use, but can get slow if you press it to work hard. The internal memory has 512 megabytes of ROM and 256 megabytes of RAM. Motorola includes a two gigabyte MicroSD card for external memory. You can extend this to 32 gigabytes by adding a card of your own.

The camera is a five megapixel unit with autofocus, LED flash and geotagging. A photo editor is included with the Backflip for adjusting your photos as you like them. The camera also takes video at an impressive thirty frames per second. The length of a video can be the maximum amount of memory left on the smartphone. For the audio section, there is a music player and a 3.5 millimeter head phone jack.

The popular point about this Backflip smartphone is the Android operating system. This is a hot ticket and makes the Backflip very usable. Email and instant messaging is included on the Backflip. The messaging networks include Windows Live, Yahoo, Google Talk, and AOL. The version of Android that this smartphone uses is 1.5. If you buy one today, the version that yours may be upgraded to is 2.1. This will allow you to have the “pinch to zoom” multitouch feature. A very nice web browser is included.

Connectivity on the Motorola Backflip is very good. There is quad band GSM for world wide use and tri band WCDMA. For wireless data connections, there is everything but infrared. The keyboard is easy to use and the battery allows for up to six hours of talk time. The Backflip is a different smartphone because of its layout, but is not some super-powerhouse when it comes to performance. It is unique, and for those people who need something that only this style of device can offer.
