The successor to the Nexus One, which is an amazing phone that was marred by the bad marketing campaign and sales decisions, has finally been confirmed and photos were leaked. The new Nexus S is nothing short of amazing, and it will really set the tone for the following Android smartphones.
Everything about it is impressive, starting with the design and ending with the software and internal hardware. It is manufactured by Samsung, and they really did a great job at making it the best Android smartphone to date – a true leader on the market.
Let’s start with the design: the new Nexus S has a very slim profile (at only 10.9 mm) and an amazingly good-looking shape, with slight curves at the top and bottom, and a lip at the bottom of the back, which is supposed to make it easier to hold. This makes it attractive to everyone, from simple customers that want a good smartphone for everyday use, to power users and developers who will use it to create apps, and do other intensive work.
The touch screen is a pretty large 4 inch unit, enough for most tasks on a smartphone and keeping its dimensions on the small side. The resolution is your standard WVGA 800×480, which looks great on this Samsung display.
There are 2 cameras on the phone, though you may not even notice the front one. You will however notice the new setting in the camera app that allows you to switch between the back 5 megapixels camera and the front VGA one with a single tap. As with most other Samsung phones, the quality of the pictures is very high, and the camera can shoot video in 720×480 at 30 fps, which is actually a bit weird and disappointing, as the iPhone 4 and most Windows Phone 7 smartphones can shoot 720p HD video. However, seeing as this is a fully open phone mainly for developers, that may not be such a big problem (plus uploading or streaming HD video from your phone to YouTube is pretty hard and slow even over a Wifi connection).
There are 512 MB of RAM, pretty standard for a modern smartphone, 16 GB of internal storage on this phone and no micro SD card slot, and before you go saying that it’s not enough – think about how many times you filled your old 8GB or 16 GB smartphone with anything (OK, something useful)?
The real showstopper, in my opinion, is the CPU and the dedicated GPU, which work together to make this phone super fast and super smooth, easily rivaling the iPhone 4. Samsung has used their fastest processor and video chip in this phone. The 1 GHz Cortex A8-based Hummingbird is as fast as it gets, and the accompanying PowerVR SGX540 is at least 2 times as fast as the nearest competitor from Qualcomm’s solutions (which most of HTC devices use). And with a big 1500 mAh battery, you won’t have to worry about running out of power when you run something intensive.
The Nexus S comes pre-installed with the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is a suitable OS for this monster of a phone. It has an improved UI, a lot of new features, and it makes the phone simply excellent to use.
The Nexus S will be available in stores at about $550 unlocked (a very reasonable price) in stores on December, 20th, right in time to be the perfect Christmas gift for yourself and anyone you love. I have no doubts it will be a big success and possibly become one of the best selling Android phones the next year.
