Five Tips That You Should Teach Your Kids To Keep Their Computer Secured

by Admin on July 11, 2010

When it comes to kids, the last thing that they are thinking about is the evils in the world. They have an inherent nature to believe that everything is good and that nothing bad will happen to them. It is because of this, and them just not knowing any better, that they will surf the web and click on anything that looks interesting to them. This is why the family computer is most of the time the most virus ridden computer in the household. So you must know not only how to protect your computer from these kinds of threats but you must also show your kids how to avoid them as well. In this article, we will give you five tips that should keep your kids out of trouble when they surf the internet on their computer.

The first step

The first step is something that you have probably told them already. And that is to not talk to strangers over the net. There are many predators that are hunting kids on the chat sites and as a parent you must be aware of this. Tell your kids that they are not allowed to go to a web site without your permission even if they are on their own computer.

The second step

The second step is that you should warn your kids about the dangers of links from people that they do not know. When you are just clicking on links, there is going to come a time when you are going to click on one that does something bad to your computer. Make sure that you tell your kids about this. Explain to them that their computer will be messed up if they just click on links from anybody. Explain to them they should only click on links from people that they know.

The third step

Do not turn off the antivirus update. This is something that you must really drill down into your kid’s heads. Sometime when they are using the computer, the antivirus updater might come on. It will only last a minute but sometimes in that minute it might cause the computer to go slower. This will cause the kids to try and shut it off. Make sure that they do not do that. Explain to them that the action could leave you unprotected and mess up the computer.

The fourth step

Always log out of your chat programs. The longer that you leave a chat window open, the more you are going to attract bots. Bot are the automated messages that try to get you to click on links that take you to bad places on the internet. They do not have to turn off the computer but they should at least turn off the chat when they are not using it.

The final step

Show them how to log onto their own profile when they are using the family computer. And make sure that you do not give them administrator privileges on that profile. Even though this will not protect the whole computer from everything that they do, it will at least help. Some bad programs need root access to be able to install, not having them as administrators will head malware programs like this off at the path.

These are the five tips that will help your child be more secured on the computer.
