Portable tablet computers are nothing new having been around for many years. However, functionality and usability has seen a change so drastic that the old tablets are hardly even recognisable. 1989 saw the first real tablet of note, the GridPad, and since then, manufacturers have been striving for perfection.

Fast forward to 2010 and the battle to produce the most sophisticated tablets is stepping up a few notches with the Galaxy Tab from Samsung here to shake Apple’s world – but is this something that can be achieved?

Once you take the wrappers of both of these devices, the first thing that is apparent is the size difference. Whilst the Apple iPAD offers a 9.7” LED screen, the Galaxy comes in at just 7” and with a slightly lower resolution of 1024×600 (vs iPAD at 1024×768). However, in theory, with a smaller screen, the Galaxy should appear that little bit sharper. You might also be pleased to learn that the Galaxy screen is Multi Touch as well.

Both devices offer a 1GHz processor, the Galaxy with the ARM Cortex A8 and the iPAD with their A4. Both processors are more than capable of powering these devices and the plethora of applications that are available from their respective marketplaces. Thankfully Samsung had the sight of mind to add GPS in as standard where as this is only available on the 3G versions of the iPAD.

However, many felt that Apple let themselves down by not adding at least a front facing camera to allow for on-line video calls, something that a device like this is screaming out for. Here is where the Galaxy can shine though by offering not only a 1.3mp front facing camera, but also a 3.2mp rear camera as well! We would have liked to have seen a xenon flash over the chosen LED though.

You also won’t feel quite as alone whilst out with the Galaxy either, because you are also able to make calls! However, we are a little unsure how a 7” tablet at your ear might feel though, so we would suggest using the built in Bluetooth and a headset to avoid any unnecessary accidents.

Offering an impressive 7 hours battery life, the Galaxy is not too far behind the iPAD with their claimed 10 hours battery life, although if you read user reviews, many iPAD owners seem to be able to not only achieve this, but exceed as well with many getting close to 12 hours! Impressive by any standards!

Apple iPad

As we all know, you are unable to view Flash content though the iPAD so did Samsung follow suit in restricting the use of Flash through their Android tablet? Thankfully, no… Whilst browsing the web you will be able to make full use of those sites which have flash embedded – something that many incorporate today. This should make for a much more pleasing web surfing experience. But will this make that much of a difference? Studies carried out over the last couple of years estimate around 30% of websites carry flash of some sort. That is roughly one third of all websites!

Both of these tablets offer similar functionality but with the Samsung’s higher spec, will this be a true contender for those who had been considering an Apple iPAD? It is more compact, can take pictures and make voice calls, is tied in with the enormous Android marketplace… Time will tell, but the gloves are on and it is time for these giants to start slogging it out!

At present, the Android phone market is boosting up and every month new Android phones are added to the present mobile market . We are familiar with the smart phone maker HTC and it is popular for its windows mobile phones but things changed and they are now releasing mobile phones based on Android and one such mobile is EVO 4G which is the first Android phones that features 4G technology. On the other side Motorola with its Droid series is increasing its share in smartphone market. Droid has the most following in the Android mobile phone market. Both the phones features 4.3″ display and fastest processors up to date running on them and these devices also features Android 2.1 OS. Now they can be upgradeable to Android 2.2 (Froyo). We now compare Droid X from Motorola with HTC EVO 4G.

Design:

HTC EVO 4G has plastic material on the front and smooth finishing on the back. It is 0.5 inch thick compared to its rival Droid X which is 0.39 inches thick.

Droid X quality build is good with premium choice materials and Droid X is pretty much solid. Droid X is slightly lighter than EVO 4G. Both these handsets have 4.3 inch gaint size display but Droid X is narrow and longer where as Evo 4G is shorter and wider. EVO 4G utilizes touch sensor buttons at the bottom of the display which are painful where as Droid X uses hardware buttons which is very tactile.

Evo 4G contains front facing camera with 1.3 mega pixel cam mostly used for video calling which lacks in Droid X.

Both the devices have micro usb which can be used to charge the phone and connect to other devices and a hdmi port to connect to your television.

The display in both EVO 4G and Droid X is 4.3″ the resolution of Droid X is slightly higher than EVO 4G. Droid X features resolution of 480 x 854 pixels where as EVO 4G features WVGA display but you would not find much difference when seen with naked eye.

Both the handsets run Android 2.1 OS but the difference between these two phones come with their custom interface. Evo 4G uses HTC sense UI where as Droid X uses custom interface by Motorola.

Coming to the interface you love the HTC sense UI over Android 2.1 on EVO 4G than Droid X but either Droid X interface is not that much bad.

Performance:

Evo 4G is powered by 1 Ghz snapdragon processor where as the Droid X is powered by 1 Ghz TI OMAP 3630 processor. Both the processors in these phones offer decent performance.

Memory support:

Droid X is equipped with 8 GB on board and 16 GB pre-installed where as EVO 4G is shipped with 8 GB microSD. Both the devices contains 512 MB RAM and 1GB internal ROM.

Wi-Fi Hot spot

Both the phones serves as Wi-Fi hot spot with instant access to limited number of computers or other wireless enabled devices.

Browsing:

Reading text will not be a problem and Scrolling is pretty smooth on both the handsets but compared to Evo 4G, browsing in Droid X is smoother. Flash-lite is enabled in EVO 4G so flash content will play on Evo 4G and you will not see this in Droid X.

Camera Quality:

The cam picture quality in Droid X is superior than Evo 4G. Colors are more vibrant in Pics that are shot with Droid X. Even in low light conditions Droid X produce more quality images. Video experience in Droid X is superior to Evo 4G and Droid X produce more natural colors. Both the handsets are able to shoot the video at 720 px (1280x720p resolution) but the video in Droid X is pretty smooth compared to Evo 4G. Droid X shoots video at 24 frames/second (playback video rate is 30 frames/second) where as Evo 4G shoots the video at 20 frames/second so you find slight jerkiness in Evo 4G when shooting video.

Music:

Evo 4G utilizes the HTC music player where as Droid X utilizes Android music player. There is no difference with the music players in both the phones.

Virtual Keyboard:

Both devices don’t offer physical keyboards they offer only virtual keypad. Evo 4G utilises the HTC Keyboard where as Droid X depends on Stock Android 2.1 keyboard. The response of the on-screen keyboard in Droid X is more responsive. In Droid X you will have separate symbol button if you want to type a number or a symbol. In Evo 4G the same alphabetic keys can be used to type the punctuations and other symbols directly from the main onscreen keyboard.

Battery life:

Considering sms, email and voice calling as basic things for which these phones are used and with same battery settings in both the phones, the battery completely discharges in 24 hours in DROID X where as in HTC Evo 4g its 15 hrs.

Conclusion

EVO 4G lack in some areas where Droid X is performing well and vice versa. Droid X lacks in some areas like – Front facing camera, kick stand and excel in areas like Image and Video quality, navigation which is speed and smooth compared to EVO 4G and more over the battery of Droid lasts for 24 hrs compared to EVO 4G which lasts for 15 hrs doing basic things on your phone.

Nokia launches Dual SIM Phones C1 and C2 in India

Nokia finally looked down from the smartphone race and released a dual SIM mobile that has been vigorously demanded by most of its users, the only facility Nokia lack in which many manufacturers has made and selling their handsets based on this feature mainly. Nokia has released two low range Dual SIM handsets C1-00 and C2-00 where two SIM slots are present and users can switch from one SIM to another by the press of one button. Both the SIMs needs to be in GSM connectivity to work in the module mobiles.

The dual SIM connection is done separately than other company dual SIM handsets, two SIM cards can be entered in the SIM slots separate, named as SIM 1 and SIM 2, but will not be useable both SIMs simultaneously. One shortcut is provided in the phone menu, which changes the SIM connection, so it is not a Dual Standby mobile, although Nokia provided these mobiles with the call divert facility so that when one SIM is active, calls for the inactive SIM goes there by default, so the user do not have to miss and calls coming from outside for any of the SIMs, but to call any number or send any message via the inactive SIM, that has to be activated first.

The C1-00 is one of the lowest range basic color mobiles Nokia has released since the beginning and the look and feel is like old Nokia models where mobile phones used to be black and white only. The C1-00 has a 1.8” TFT Screen displaying the minimal resolution of 128 x 160 pixels in 65k color. It runs in Series 30 Symbian interface with typical tools like Calendar, Clock etc. It doesn’t support any external cards but has 500 contact and 20 recent call log storing capacity. Indian FM radio is included that can be listened with the attached cord and it also has basic java games like Sudoku and snake n ladder.

The C1-00 has been targeted to the mass users who use their mobile phone only for calling purpose and nothing else, and it lacks communication like Bluetooth that could make it better than just a basic color model. Although Nokia claimed that the BL-5C battery used in many of Nokia low end handsets will give longest standby time of over one month, but lack of multimedia support left a little use of such long standby time.

The second Model, C2-00 is pretty upgraded than the C1 and it has multimedia features to some extent. Although it provides same small 128 x 160 small sized 1.8” screen, the C2-00 has VGA camera and other necessary features that are basic requirements of a mobile other than calling. This model contains internal 54 MB Flash memory than can be extended up to 32 GB via Micro-SD card, which is hot swappable from the side panel of the mobile. The C2-00 runs in Symbian Series 40 3rd Edition which means it support themes, wallpapers and Java games. The C2-00 has Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and Micro USB support for sharing files and synchronization with PC or Laptop. Basic Video player for 3GP and MP4 format files are Opera Mini 4.0 is in-built in the C2-00, increasing the features available for this model.

The much rumored T-Mobile G2, which was previously known as the G1 Blaze, has finally been confirmed to be released at the end of September, 2010 and T-Mobile G2 has been slated for a release date of September 29th. This is the direct successor to the very successful and first Android phone ever, the T-Mobile G1, also known as the HTC Dream.

The T-Mobile G1 was the first ever smart phone to come out with Android pre-installed, and as such, it was supposed to be very advanced, both in hardware and software terms. And it was, for some time, dominating the smart phone niche for developers, business professionals (who weren’t afraid to try something new) and simple users who just wanted to have something unique and yet functional.
The G1 successfully competed with the other phones of its time, with its only drawbacks being the smaller screen and the not quite finished Android OS.

The T-Mobile G2 is set to be an even better phone, and seeing that it comes with the newest Android OS and has another model to learn the mistakes from, we have no doubt it will be even more successful than its predecessor.The latest Android, code named 2.2 Froyo, has a lot of great new features, including Flash and fast Javascript rendering support in Chrome and the ability to install apps directly on the micro SD card, all of which will certainly be useful to any owner.

The official specs haven’t been released, but from all the rumors, we can make out that the G2 will be the US version of the HTC Vision, which will be released in Europe at the end of September, also.
The hardware specs, as purported by various web sites, fans and unofficial spokesmen, will include a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, either 256 or 512 MB RAM, a 3.7 inch screen with a capacitive touch panel, a 5 mega pixels camera, all the other usual stuff like GPS, Bluetooth, a compass, etc. But the most important additions are the Wireless Draft-N adapter and support for HSPA+ (this has actually been confirmed and is one of the major playing cards for this phone by T-Mobile, the maximum download speed is 14.4 Mbps using this technology), which makes this phone the first official 4G cell phone in the world. That is a great thing for those who want a speedy mobile Internet connection.

As you can make out from the photos that were acquired and published by our friends at Engadget, the phone has a slide out hardware keyboard (a great looking one at that) and looks pretty slim, probably around the same depth as the Motorola Droid.

The phone will come fully unlocked, meaning it will not be locked to the network (unless you want it cheaper by getting a contract) or have an encrypted ROM storage, which will allow you to install any Android ROM you want, including the newest 3.0 when it’s released. This is great news for all the developers and people who want to have the latest software on their phone or experiment with various settings and configurations.

The price is expected to be anywhere from $400 to $600, which will make it a good competitor to other similar devices on the market, including the Samsung Fascinate, Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 and X10, Motorola Droid 2 and others. Although TmoNews posted a photo of an internal T-Mobile document, showing the G2 to be $499.99 off-contract, or $199.99 with (presumably) a new two-year agreement and a $50 MIR.
