Since the original release of the iPhone, Apple has continued to try and better their original design with each new version that they put on the shelves. With the iPhone 3G we saw an improved camera, design and more features such as 3G connectivity meaning a faster connection to the web. Now Apple has released the iPhone 3GS. But what’s so good about this latest model and is it worth upgrading? Let’s find out.
With the new iPhone 3GS Apple has upgraded many of the features. The iPhone 3G was available in 2 different models, the 8GB or 16GB version, depending on how much you were willing to pay. Now, with the iPhone 3GS Apple has improved this further offering 3 different models, the 8GB, 16GB and the new 32GB version. This new addition to the range of iPhones will allow users to store even more music on their iPhones and will be great for storing large movie files.
Apple has also improved the quality of the camera with the new iPhone taking it from the 2 Megapixel cameras that we saw in the iPhone 3G to a stunning 3G megapixel camera. Now you may think that this doesn’t sound like there is much of a difference but trust me, the difference in quality is huge. Apple has also the ability to record video with the new iPhone and with it new 3 mega pixel camera the video looks stunning. Apple has installed focusing on the new iPhone 3GS so that photos and video look even clearer and from my research this works extremely well.
If you currently own or have owned the previous 3G iPhone then you will probably have noticed that one of the main problems with the phone is that the screen isn’t very resistant to things such as finger marks. Now, this isn’t very good being as it is a touch screen phone. With the new 3GS iPhone Apple has developed a new kind of technology that is designed to help the iPhone screen resist these marks and make it so that with a simple wipe of the screen on your trouser leg, the marks should come off. This technology is in the form of a new kind of resin that covers the iPhones screen making it much more resistant to these marks. From what I have seen Apple has done a very good job with this aspect and the new screen works well.
Apple claims that the new iPhone 3GS is upto twice as fast as its predecessor and from suing the new iPhone 3GS for a few weeks I have really noticed the increase in speed. Even just running simple applications such as Safari and Mail the new iPhone 3GS is in a league of its own. Browsing the web is much faster which allows you to get things done faster and give you more time for playing games. Speaking of playing games, this is where you really notice the speed increase in the new iPhone 3GS. Even just booting up the apps the new iPhone 3GS manages to complete the task much more quickly and once you are in the game they run faster and much more smoothly. This is due to the 3GS running on a 600MHz CPU with 256MB RAM (up from 400MHz and 128MB) which if you don’t know much about computers or the way technology works will probably mean nothing to you, but lets just say that it is a big and much needed improvement for the iPhone.
The new iPhone also comes with a few more features built in straight out of the box, One of these features that I speak of is the new Compass App. Now you might not think that this is very useful but you would be surprised. Since having the new iPhone 3GS I have used this app a number of times, sometimes just to impress my mates down the pub and sometimes just to find out which way I am facing. Either way the App is quite handy and Apple has done a nice job designing it, giving it a nice and easy to use interface.
Another new feature with the iPhone 3GS is the voice control feature. The idea of this feature is that you should be able to control almost anything you want to do on your iPhone simply by using the voice control feature and telling it what you want (in English). Now you might think that this sounds like a recipe for disaster as pretty much any device that has had this feature in the past has always ended up malfunctioning and calling someone you didn’t want it to call or simply not working. It would be easy to assume that this feature wouldn’t work very well but in actual fact you would be wrong. Since owning the iPhone 3GS I have used the voice control feature quite a lot and I have to say, it hardly ever gets it wrong. Whether you are telling your iPhone to call one of your contacts or even play a song from your extensive MP3 collection it somehow manages to pull it off. The fact that Apple have once again pulled off what they set out to do is fantastic and really shows the work they put into each new release of the iPhone and pretty much any other one of their products.
So, I’ve told you all about the new features on the iPhone 3GS but is it really worth buying? The iPhone 3GS is approximately $100 more expensive than it predecessor (depending on model, tariff etc) but for the amount of extra features you get with it I would say that it is definitely worth the extra money. As well as the many features I have mentioned on the 3GS, Apple has also increased the iPhones data speed to 7.2Mbps. For anyone that browses the web often or likes to download music or movies then this alone would make the new iPhone 3GS worth the money.
