Earlier when Apple announced the release of iOS 4 at the Worldwide Wide Developers Conference, we only knew that multitasking would be included, but today, when Apple finally released its new operating system (OS) for iPod and iPhone, (and soon to be released on the iPad) we can find that it contains more than 100 new features. So here is a quick guide to some of the new features and updates that you need to know:-
iBooks
iBooks is one of the most amazing ways to download and read books. It is more than an eBook reader. There are lots of books available and some of them being completely free. Once downloaded, books will appear on your bookshelf in the iBooks application.
Multitasking
To start multi-tasking, you simply close the app you’re currently running and start a new one. Double tap the home button and you’re presented with a list of the apps running, allowing you to switch between them. It allows you to run 3rd party apps and switch over them instantly without trifling speed of the inbuilt app. when you launch an app that supports multitasking and switch to a second app, the first one will stay running in the background and to switch between the applications, press the home button twice. To switch to an entirely new application, click on its icon and it will take you right back to the place you were before you left it.
Change your home screen wallpaper
Change the background wallpaper of your Home screen by clicking, Settings -> Wallpaper, pick an image you want to use, and from there choose the “Set Home Screen” button.
Create Folders
Quick access to your favorite application and you can also manage up to 2160 applications. The new iOS 4 features organized shortcuts of application into folder with drag and drop functionality. To create a folder hold down an application until they all joggle and then drag it on top of another application. To add additional apps to the file, just drag and drop them into the folder.
The Mail application is renovated in iOS 4 with a unified inbox leading the changes and lets users see all incoming messages from multiple accounts. Threaded messages are also supported in iOS 4 for better tracking of replies and follow-ups. Tapping files attached to e-mails in the new OS allows them to be opened in separate applications, including third-party offerings.
Improved Image quality and Photos application
Apple seems to have worked on the quality of image and has also added a new feature: you can now digitally zoom. Just tap the screen above the shutter button and use the slider to adjust the zoom level up to 5x. You can also now tap the screen to pick points of focus when shooting video on the 3GS. Upgrading to iOS 4 won’t miraculously improve the image quality of the camera on your existing device but Apple has added a new feature: you can now digitally zoom. Just tap the screen above the shutter button and use the slider to adjust the zoom level up to 5x. As with all digital zooms, image quality takes a big hit as you’re just making pixels bigger rather than physically zooming in to the object, and thus we rather fail to see the point. But, we can only assume some people have requested the feature so there it is. You can also now tap the screen to pick points of focus when shooting video on the 3GS.
The iOS 4 update can be downloaded from iTunes. The size of the update will vary depending on what kind of device you use.
