5 Cool iPhone Apps You Must Check Out

by Admin on May 11, 2010

The Apple iPhone has got the biggest database of apps written and available for sale on the marketplace. That is already and established and verified truth and it’s gonna be quite a while before any other smart phone or mobile operating system can get anywhere close to them, especially when there are dozens of new apps submitted and approved every single day. Plus, Apple’s recent crackdown on all of the cookie-cutter applications on the marketplace that simply copy other apps’ functionality while not providing anything unique and useful on their own will ensure that the quality of all the apps on the marketplace will stay high and the sheer number of them manageable.

The iPad, which was just released and the soon to be announced fourth generation iPhone will also have a vital role in helping the apps marketplace grow even more, because all the applications are cross compatible between all of these devices (of course, that includes the older iPhone 3G and 3GS).

If you want to buy an Apple iPhone, you can be sure that it won’t get old and die within the next couple of years. Though a lot of people will recommend that you wait for the release of the new iPhone, because you may like the new features that it will bring (front camera, bigger and better screen, multi-tasking, etc.) and because the older models will suddenly be much cheaper, which will help you save quite a good amount of money.

Now, whether you have already decided or are still pondering over buying an iPhone, you’ll most likely benefit from knowing what kind of great applications are available for it. So, here are some of the best ones:

Skype.

You may know this company and their service from their desktop application. Skype is basically a VoIP phone company whose main services include cheap calls and messaging to any phone number anywhere in the world. You can also buy a number from them and use it as a primary number anywhere in the world, by redirecting the calls from it to any landline or cellular phone you may have. This is a great service for travelers and business people. By using the iPhone app, you can use your 3G data plan or any Wi-Fi hotspot to make very cheap calls or send SMS messages anywhere in the world, receive voice messages and chat for free with other desktop or mobile Skype users.

Layar Reality Browser.

This application is simply amazing, especially once you get the hang of it and can use all of its features like a pro. It is like a GPS navigator, except much better because of all of its users, who constantly update the central database with interesting and relevant information about hundreds of thousands of place around the world. So, if you just arrived in Ireland on vacation and want to know where is the best pub in your part of town, you can easily use Layar to get the info: just search for “best pub”, “best beer”, “best whisky” :-) or something similar and you’ll definitely get at least a few pointers to the best pubs around. Then you can navigate to any of them using a map or holding the phone up and seeing a pointer directly above the building where you need to go (superimposed on the screen). It’s like a compass, but instead of North, it points to a pub (or any other location).

Photoshop Mobile.

There is a very slim chance that you actually never heard of Photoshop. It’s the best professional images and photographs editor for desktop computers, used by most professional designers around the world. And now it has a mobile version for the iPhone, which is also completely free! It certainly isn’t as powerful as the desktop version, but it’s more than enough to let you quickly edit an image for sending it by MMS or posting on a blog or social network like Facebook. It allows you to crop, resize, modify, apply visual effects (black and white, sepia, old, mosaic, etc.) to any picture you have on your iPhone or have just taken using the phone’s camera.

Need for Speed Shift.

Racing games will never get old, and the Need for Speed is (once again) the best racing game for the desktop. This mobile version is a very good port for the iPhone, and allows you to experience some great racing cars and tracks wherever you are. The experience is very similar to that of playing Need for Speed on the Sony PSP, so if you have one just for games, you can now easily sell it or leave it at home, because the iPhone can do the same while being much smaller and energy efficient.

ModGuitars.com Tuner.

This is a very neat and simple web app that will help you tune any guitar. You’ve got to have an ear for music, though, because it’s not automated. It works by letting you hear the sounds of perfectly tuned guitar strings, which you later use to adjust your own.

You should definitely check out the above apps when you get your iPhone and connect it to the Internet. You’ll be amazed what such a small device can do. Also, be sure to search the marketplace for more applications that can be useful to you (there are a lot of free ones, too!).

Cool apps, I’m missing a cool new social app called Who’s Free. I am using it with my friends now. It’s great for catching up with friends who are free at the moment. They even made it to the top 5 at Vator! You can take a look at: http://bit.ly/htLQDW
